Cultural Issues, Class, and Voting

Issues of race, immigration, and white identity were prominent in the 2016 presidential election. Both pundits and scholars identified this set of issues as a major reason why Trump did so well among white working-class voters. Cultural issues, on the other hand, were rarely cited as a reason why white working-class voters were drawn to Trump. Yet in earlier years, cultural issues were considered to be important in explaining the appeal of the GOP to the working class. For example, Thomas Frank (2004) highlighted cultural issues as central to Republican success among less-affluent voters in middle America in his best-selling book, What’s the Matter with Kansas?. Among political scientists, Brewer and Stonecash (2007) examined how cultural issues and social class divided Americans. The focus on these issues in earlier elections indicates that they should be considered in any attempt to analyze and explain the changing relationship between social class and voting behavior in contemporary America.

The analysis of how cultural issues have affected the relationship between social class and partisan choice in this century will proceed in four stages. First, this chapter will outline the emergence of cultural issues in modern American politics during the last few decades of the 20th century. Second, it will describe how attitudes on cultural issues are related to religious orientations. Third, this study will analyze the effect of cultural divisions on voting behavior and party identification. Fourth, it will examine how these cultural divisions are related to social class. The data analysis will again rely on the American National Election Studies (ANES) surveys of the American electorate. As we shall see, cultural issues have been and continue to be part of the story behind the changing relationship of social class to voting behavior.
