CHAPTER 15
The next afternoon, I stared down at my phone, my hand shaking. I had a feeling I had just made a big, big mistake.
I’d gone right to bed after Ford and I had gotten home, and had kept my phone off all night, and then, feeling it might be an exercise in self-discipline, had kept it off this morning when I’d gone into work. There was also the added benefit of the possibility that if Hallie was texting Teddy, she was most likely getting frustrated with his lack of responsiveness. Which was fine with me.
Reid had been scooping at half speed, even as he told me repeatedly just how over Sophie he was, and how it really didn’t bother him that she didn’t like him that way. I’d tried to make it seem like I believed him, even though this couldn’t have been further from the truth. It was during these soliloquies that I had to stop myself from reaching for my phone, just to have a distraction. But I knew if I had my phone on, I’d start texting Hallie again, and I knew just what a delicate balance this had to be. One wrong text could upset everything.
Which was why I should have known better. I’d gotten back from work, and I had the whole rest of the afternoon ahead of me. I’d planned on seeing if I could pull Gwyneth away from the documentary long enough to ask if she wanted to go to the beach with me. But then I’d turned on my phone and seen these texts from Hallie:
Hallie Bridges
11:05 AM
Morning, Bear …
Hallie Bridges
11:07 AM
I’m just lying here missing you … wishing
I was waking up next to you like before.
Missing me?
Hallie Bridges
11:07 AM
xoxo
It was like someone had just punched me in the gut. It was exactly what I’d been afraid of—but here was proof. My hand tightened on my phone so hard that my knuckles started to turn white. I tried to talk myself out of it, tell myself that maybe they’d just slept next to each other, like Josh and I had done, but I couldn’t quite make myself believe it. The proof was in Hallie’s text, on my phone in undeniable type. I knew I shouldn’t do anything, shouldn’t react without thinking this through, but I was typing back and then sending a response before my rational side kicked in.
Teddy Callaway
2:15 PM
Actually, I’m not missing you. At all.
Teddy Callaway
2:15 PM
In fact, I think we should end it.
Teddy Callaway
2:16 PM
Bye.
It wasn’t until the last text went through that I came back to my senses and clapped my hand over my mouth. I could see Hallie was writing back—and quite a bit, judging from how long her text bubble was showing she was typing. I turned the phone off before I could see what she wrote or would have to explain myself. Had I just wrecked this because I let my stupid jealousy get in the way?
“Are you okay?” I whirled around and saw Rosie striding into the kitchen, dressed nicer than usual.
