J.T. had been sitting on the bench with Penny when he’d felt Brick’s pain. His heart ached for him. Brick tried to be so strong for everyone else, and he believed he had to hide his own feelings. Nothing soft about Nathan Brickman, no siree Bob. But J.T. knew the truth—within that rock-hard chest was the biggest thing about Brick—his heart.

Brick walked back over to the trees by the jogging path, where Scott was quietly standing guard over the scene, making sure no one came close. J.T. sat back down beside Penny on the grass nearby.

“Hey, you all right?” she asked.

He nodded. “It’s Brick I’m worried about. And King, of course. And Rodney.” He groaned. “I didn’t say anything earlier…I mean, for one thing I’m not even sure what exactly Rodney has endured—but it was pretty bad, I’m afraid.”

Penny took his hand, as much for her own comfort as for his. “I don’t know how police officers deal with their job. I couldn’t do it. This is heartbreaking.”

Before J.T. could answer her, wailing sirens indicated the rapid approach of Brick’s backup.
