Every day, more and more angels seemed to be streaming into their makeshift refuge. Adriel knew it was just an illusion, though, his mind playing a trick on him. New angels and humans were brought in every day, but they were losing brothers and sisters at a much faster rate. Those that did manage to find them or be found were often covered in blood or missing a limb.
âThis is the result of arrogance,â Adriel muttered. It was more to himself than to Isniir, who stood beside him. âYou think we would have learned our lesson the first time.â
Isniir shook his head. âYou donât need to be so cruel,â the Wolf said.
He put a hand on Adrielâs shoulder. The spellcaster could feel it vibrating as Isniir tried to keep his body slowed. Isniirâs talent was raw speed; he was faster than any angel could ever hope to be, but such speed came at a price. The angel easily tired and had to actively slow himself to appear somewhat normal to those around him. Adriel had told him many times that he did not need to exhaust himself so, but Isniir never listened.
âObservations are objective,â Adriel said matter-of-factly. âIt is not cruel, just true.â
âI guess cruel isnât the right word,â Isniir retorted. âCold.â
Adriel looked at his companion. He wished he could feel as Isniir felt but compassion never came easily to him. Curiosity, wonder and ambition were the emotions he was most familiar with. Empathy and understanding were the ones he tried to learn. Over the millennia, Isniir had started to show him that. After the last decade, though, Adriel feared those lessons had been erased by the cruelty and horrors of the apocalypse.
The spellcaster looked around the sprawling space they inhabited. It was a warehouse of some sort or at least used to be. Large loading docks dotted the exterior beyond the aluminum doors to Adrielâs right, while half-empty pallets lay on a floor that was being increasingly used as an infirmary. There was only one other way into the building, and that was through the single front door down a few twisting hallways. All over the walls, angels had painted runes and sigils to mask the building from all sorts of entities. At Adrielâs insistence it was also warded from human sight, which ensured that any possessed people would not stumble across it.
Even if they could have seen the warehouse from outside its walls, most eyes would have passed it over. The building was covered in flaking beige paint, about as nondescript as buildings went. It was on a street of equally bland structures outside of a town that barely stood anymore. A sign that Adriel saw entering the town was broken in half, only the first three lettersâCreâwere still legible. Similarly, it noted a population of 1,1 but the remainder was simply missing. If the two numbers had not been separated, Adriel would not have been surprised to learn only eleven people lived in the town before the apocalypse.
