CHAPTER 8
KiDS iN THE KiNG'S COURT
The king's throne room is exactly how I imagined it. Huge ceilings, elven soldiers lined up on either side of us, and the king himself sitting on his throne at the back of the room. Most of the banners that line the rock glass walls are decorated with what I assume is the elves' crest.
I look around at everyone else and they look just as nervous as I am. Right now, this Goblin Queen thing is working in our favor, but in a couple minutes it could all go sideways and that'll be the end of us. They'll probably toss us to the ground from the tallest tree or something.
A handful of soldiers stand in front of the throne, their spears locked together like a barricade. As we get closer, they unlock their weapons and step to the side, creating an opening for Aranel to pass through. Once he passes, they quickly close the gap and interlock weapons once again.
"I don't have a good feeling about this," Bentley whispers to me.
"Silence. You will speak only when spoken to," one soldier says, taking an aggressive step towards Bentley.
Bentley puts his hands up in the air. The soldier steps back in line and Bentley slowly puts his hands down.
Aranel leans in and whispers some stuff to the king. Hopefully, it's something along the lines of 'these guys are totally awesome, let's let them go,' but I kinda doubt it.
After a few seconds, Aranel steps away from the king and stands off to the side. With a nod of the king's head, the guards in front of us step aside, giving us a clear view of the king.
The king is nothing like I imagined. I was imagining an old man, with a beard, leaning on a royal scepter or something. Nope. He actually looks just a little older than Aranel. Short blond hair, no beard, and no scepter. His posture, and the way he stares at us thoughâlike he's staring into our soulsâmakes him quite intimidating.
"It has come to my attention that you five were captured while attempting to pass through the Faewood, is that correct?"
"Uh... Yes your majesty," I say nervously.
"And you're also the ones responsible for releasing the creature known as the Goblin Queen?"
I look at Aranel and he gives me a slight nod.
"Yes. That was us. But we didn't know that sh-"
The king raises his hand, and I immediately shut up. Last thing I wanna do is make the king mad and get us all locked away forever, or worse.
"It is unfortunate that Vanika once again walks among us. The destruction she caused during the Goblin War was tremendous. Many fell during that time, both soldiers and civilians, of all races. It was bloodshed on an unprecedented scale, and something we must make sure never happens again."
The king pauses for what seems like forever, and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to say something or just keep my mouth shut. I'm leaning towards the latter, but shoot Aranel a quick glance for reassurance.
