Chapter Fifteen

The sun took on a tired golden glow as the evening wore on. Tinesi was over at the shop with Frost and Mist, trying to learn the ropes.

I headed over to the Market District. There was a nice tavern that served some bomb-ass mutton. They were always crowded so I wanted to reserve a table for the four of us later on that night.

I figured a late dinner would be fitting, since I’d have to go out around midnight to try to bend Demonalia’s ear again.

I made the reservation – I greased the hostess into giving us a nice table with a few extra gold coins – then noticed a hooded figure was following me.

In fact, I was pretty sure that I’d spotted that same hooded figure when I left the Whisperwood Enchantment Shop.

I thought about that strange ripple Mother Gaia had mentioned and quickly made a save point.

<SAVE POINT REACHED!>

I had no weapons on me, which was slightly annoying. Then again, living a quiet life as an enchanter didn’t necessitate me traipsing around fully armed and armored.

I was about to look around for a handy weapon – broomstick, anyone? – but then lost my patience.

“Screw this,” I thought, then just turned around and marched toward the hooded figure. If this guy was indeed a threat, I’d just restore the last save point and take it from there.

The hooded figure tensed a bit as I approached, but didn’t flee or make any other sudden movements.

Instead, the figure stepped slowly into a nearby alley, where the shadows were thick and the sunlight couldn’t reach.

Except the figure didn’t do this in an attempt to evade me. He did it slowly, giving me plenty of time to follow.

When I followed him into the alley, I saw it wasn’t a ‘him’ at all. Demonalia pulled back her hood and smiled apologetically.

“Oh, it’s you,” I said.

“Forgive my trickery,” she said. “I wanted to talk to you at your enchantment shop, but you were stepping out just as I was approaching.”

“You could have just said hello,” I said.

She looked away bashfully. “I know,” she said. “I just lost my nerve, that’s all.”

“Well, I hope I don’t come across as unfriendly,” I said.

She raised her red eyes to mine. “That’s not what I meant,” she smiled. “It’s just, I’m not used to folks around this city being very receptive toward me. You’re pretty much the first. I’m just trying to get used to being able to call someone a friend, that’s all.”

I smiled. “So we’re friends,” I said.

“After what you did for me, we are absolutely friends,” she said. She scowled. “The Children of Mother Gaia.” She punctuated her disgust by spitting on the pavement. “Bloody hypocrites.”

“Yeah, I don’t like them either,” I said. “But what’s up? Why were you coming over to chat?”

“I decided that I owed you an explanation,” Demonalia said. “About why I refused to let the Summer Kingdom use my factory.”

I winced a little. I’d been hoping that she had changed her mind by now.
