I was surprised to see both Simon and William downstairs at breakfast. William’s face was flushed deeply. They seemed to have been arguing. But this was nothing new, so I poured a cup of tea and slumped into a seat at the dining table.

“You look awful,” William exclaimed. “As if you didn’t sleep at all last night.”

“I didn’t sleep well.” I took a long sip, and hot steam burned my nose. “Frankly, I’m frustrated. The notebooks didn’t help us at all. I agree that we can’t go into that underground place without knowing more about it, but we need to put these pieces together. So far, Max is trifling with us, and everything seems to be playing in his favor.”

“Abbie,” Simon began, “you should eat some—”

“She’s right.” William cut Simon off. “In fact, Simon and I were just arguing about that.”

“William wants to go into the cavern below the church and blow it up with dynamite,” Simon said flatly.

“Exactly!” William exclaimed.

Simon sighed. “Apart from the fact that all three of us are probably inept at handling dynamite, we cannot act brashly, as I stated the other night. It could be disastrous.”

William groaned and pushed back his chair. “What you don’t seem to understand, Simon, is that they are always ahead of us. Max just because of who he is. As long as he takes the elixir, he will be invincible to anyone.”

I chuckled darkly into my teacup. “So what are you saying? That I should take the elixir so that I might be like him?”

William’s eyes brightened momentarily. “It’s an idea.”

“Never,” Simon and I muttered simultaneously. “That’s complete nonsense, William,” Simon added.

William pulled his jacket off the back of his chair. “I’m going out. When you come up with a plan that’s better than mine, do please let me know.”

The front door slammed, hard, as he left.

Simon and I sat in frustrated silence for a full five minutes.

“Abbie, I almost forgot. A letter from Lady Westfield has arrived for you.”
