Arnold worked carefully, but quickly. The moon was a dreary looking place, but they werenât here to sightsee. There were enough craters that finding one wasnât hard. The poor moon had really gotten beat up since the black hole had captured it. Craters on top of craters. If anything, that made it harder, because a lot of the crater walls had collapsed. Not that much to hide behind, but it would have to do. It didnât help that the moon had a lot less metallic content than the asteroid that theyâd used before.
Arnold selected a crater that was mostly intact and put it on the main holo viewer. âThatâs the best Iâve been able to find,â he said. âIf I had more time, I could do better, but I figured quick was safer than spending the time to look for better. It should be good enough with that mess out there. As long as the Imperials donât get a clean scan, they shouldnât be able to spot us with the moon as partial cover. Now, if they make their way close enough to scan the moon directly, they probably will.â
âItâs going to have to do,â Marion answered him. âWhy in the galaxy would they come here, even if they figure out about the black hole? Iâm sure it will be fine. Plot me a fast course, and Iâll get us down there. Hopefully, this is the last time we have to hide away. Iâm getting tired of this.â
The AI flashed up a plot for landing and Marion quickly started them on the way down. She was an ok pilot, but she would never be as good as the likes of the Imperial Princess. As far as she was concerned, she didnât care. I didnât have all the perks she did, either. If I could have had the opportunities she had, I could match her ability, Iâm sure.
She knew she was kidding herself about that. After watching Jaslynn fly their ship on the trip to the galactic core, she knew just how much talent the royal brat had. No, some of that was just the abilities of the young woman, abilities that most folks like Marion just couldnât match.
Her thoughts had served as a distraction, so she didnât worry about landing with such little power on the drives. They wouldnât have second chances if something went wrong. Luckily, with the size of the moon, it didnât take long until the hard part of the flight was already done. Soon, they were flying over the surface of the moon as she worked to drop their speed enough to land, and it was easy enough even Marion could pull it off without trouble.
âThis place has seen its better days,â Arnold said. âI wonder if it will even be intact by the time itâs pulled into the black hole. I would think the black hole would pull it apart into little pieces.â
âYouâre probably right,â Jamison answered. âNeither will we survive if we donât get out of here.
