“Luca, there you are.” Jax happily calls.

“Where else would I be?”

“Still as sour as ever, some things never change.”

“I just saw Cara. She looks pleased with herself.” He winks while patting me on the back.

“That’s what you wanted to discuss: the little toy you brought back home. Remind me not to go away for so long next time. Who knows what rabid strays you will bring back.” I spit back at him.

“Cara is not…” His brow creases with worry, “that’s not what I wanted to talk about.”

“No?”

“We need to talk about Oak Haven.”

“Think I would rather hear you waffle on about your toy.” I drawl while walking away from him.

I throw myself into the armchair and watch the sparks from the newly lit fire, and the smell of smoke fills my nostrils. This was always my favourite room. Wall-to-wall bookcases that housed various books, the walls were decorated blood red, which always brought back fond memories when I would come back after a hunt.

“Luca, don’t walk away from me.” I groan. Once again, my peace had been interrupted.

“The conversation had ended.”

“No, it hadn’t,” he growls, “as usual, you walked away because the conversation made you uncomfortable.”

“Everything you do makes me uncomfortable, Jax,” I smirk.

“We need to talk about it.”

“No, we don’t. Oak Haven is in the past.”

“It’s not in the fucking past,” he yells, “it’s like a great fucking black cloud that follows us everywhere and unlike you, we can’t all bury our head in the fucking sand and hope it goes away.”

I wish I could scream back and tell him that he was wrong. I still had nightmares about that house. Everything about that house was tainted. I swear, late at night, I could still hear the faint screams of women who used to crawl through the walls. I shudder to think about the horrors that actually went on in those rooms.

“We already discussed this. We can’t take our own blood.”

“I know,” he mutters.

“He stays in his lane, and we just have to…live with the consequences of his actions.”

“Except the vermin has resurfaced.”

“Why would he? After all this time.”

“I don’t know. I was hoping you could find out.” He looks at me with pleading eyes, begging me to end the torment we had all suffered at the hands of the sick bastard who inhabited Oak Haven.

“Fine, but until I know more. You do nothing. Do you understand?”

“Fine, but you know it’s only a matter of time. He’s been living on borrowed time for far too long.”

“I know,” I mutter, half to him and half to myself.

I knew he wanted it over. I knew they all wanted it over. They thought they would finally be free once the evil was gone. Everything they deemed dark would suddenly appear light once he was gone.

But that’s the thing about darkness: once it touches you and has its dark talons wrapped around you. It’s hard to break free of the choke hold it has around your heart.

Every bone in my body was stiff. The rage that courses through my veins is something I just can’t shake.
