The parlor and dining room were quiet. Mornings were always slow to start, with guests trickling downstairs or scattered around making use of the free WiFi.

Patty was still setting the table when Kyle walked in. To his surprise, no one had yet come downstairs, including Justin.

“Where’s your help?” Kyle asked. “He’s usually here by now.”

“Justin isn’t feeling well,” Patty said, placing paper napkins to the left of each plate. “He conveys his apologies and expects to be down later.”

“He’s going to the police station to make a statement, I presume,” said Kyle.

“I assume so,” said Patty. “We’ve all been asked to.”

Kyle waited for more; Patty said nothing, moving on to the silverware. He looked at the stairs. “Where is everyone?”

“After last night, I’d guess they’re not in the most convivial mood.”

Kyle knew she was right. He was surprised anyone would come to breakfast after what happened. “Maybe we should have canceled it.”

“It’s part of the package,” she reminded him. “They don’t have to eat, but it must be provided.”

“Of course.”

The somber atmosphere was interrupted when several guests began making their way into the dining room. Gladys and Carol could be heard walking to the staircase, and just behind them, Scott Harris.

A few minutes later Danny arrived and everyone was seated at the table, minus Justin and Joseph Garland. Pleasantries were exchanged without enthusiasm, as the weight of a murder clouded the room.

Kyle decided to check in on Garland before taking his seat. He excused himself and went to Garland’s room. After waiting a moment, he knocked.

“Mr. Garland?” he said, leaning into the closed door. “Joseph?”

No answer came. He knocked again. After considering the consequences of going into a guest’s room, he decided it was more important to make sure the old man was alright than to respect his seclusion.

Kyle gently opened the door, expecting to see Garland sitting at the small desk, or working on some ancestry chart on the bed. Instead, the bed was empty. The spread was undisturbed. Joseph Garland had not come back.

“That’s odd,” Kyle said to himself. “Where did you go?”

He closed the door and hurried back to the dining room, joining the others for what became the most morose meal he’d ever shared.
