The Creation of Scientific Myths

Is the term “scientific myth” too strong, perhaps too pejorative? We do not think so. “Myth” usually refers to some sort of story that is at least partially false. Myths may hold some grain of truth, surrounded by exaggerations and compelling yet unjustified stories and narratives. For example, although it is pretty clear that the Loch Ness Monster is not some sort of surviving dinosaur, it is distinctly possible that some sort of very real modern sea creatures explain the endless sightings (sharks, eels, etc., e.g., BBC, 2019; Huffington Post, 2013). A myth is plausibly called “scientific” when it is promoted, endorsed, and advocated by people who meet conventional descriptions of scientists—they have advanced degrees in scientific fields, they conduct systematic studies, and they publish in peer-reviewed journals.
