Chapter Nine

Packed in around the map, with Chase’s laptop easily to hand, the plan they had come up with had seemed if not simple, then at least possible. Between them all they had worked out exactly what Klaus and Sebastian were going to do and how they were going to do it.

It took only a few minutes after scouting out the perimeter of Sebastian’s old pack lands—and scouting it at some distance—for them to realize that it wasn’t going to work.

The alpha had changed things.

No, she had added things.

And that included guards.

From their position on one of the hillsides as far away from pack lands as they could get—with binoculars in hand—Sebastian could see dozens of guards moving around the perimeter. He thought that he recognized some of them but he couldn’t be absolutely sure. They were well hidden, Klaus had insisted on that, and the binoculars weren’t quite powerful enough to show details.

Still, they did showing moving bodies, and more of them than Sebastian had expected. To his knowledge the alpha had never deployed guards before. She had never seen the need. There were over a thousand wolves in Sebastian’s old pack. More than enough to deal with any threat even if it made its way well into the pack’s territory.

“There’s more than we expected,” Sebastian eventually said.

“We expected some?” Kara asked.

Klaus shot her a look. “After the raid on the auction? Of course.” He shook his head. “But only a handful, especially on lands this extensive.”

“There’s dozens.”

Klaus nodded. “There is.”

“And those are just the ones that we can see,” Sebastian said.

He thought about how the pack’s territory had looked on the map, the bits that he knew of it, the bits that he had made his way through as he tried to run. It all came together in his mind and he found himself swallowing unsteadily. The adrenaline that had shot through him as they got closer and closer to Emily was a tangible thing now. He could feel it running through his veins and his muscles, demanding that he do something as soon as possible. Were he on his own Sebastian might have given in to it. Likely, he would have just made a run for it, tried to find his way through the guards, to his daughter.

But, he wasn’t on his own, and that sort of thinking had not helped him last time. He needed to be patient, to be cautious, to see what the others…his friends…thought about the situation. They were only going to get one chance at this. Either they got Emily out or they didn’t. And, if they didn’t, Sebastian didn’t doubt that it would be almost impossible next time.

His heart pounded at that thought, and he looked behind him to where the others waited. They were all looking at him. Sebastian swallowed again. He wasn’t quite sure what to say. The plan had to be changed. But how?

How?

Klaus shifted position slightly. His gaze caught Sebastian’s. When he spoke, he did so slowly, almost as if he was asking permission to take charge.
