Chapter 31

Don couldn’t sleep. Every time he started to fall asleep, he would have the same nightmare, of walking into Eiran’s room to find him dead, cut up into pieces in his bed.

Finally, he got up from bed and went to have a drink in the living room to calm his nerves. He had just started believing that he would be able to settle into some semblance of a peaceful normal life, and suddenly everything had been turned upside down. He looked out the window of the penthouse into the night skyline of DC.

He heard footsteps behind him, and whirled around, fearing the worse.

Laura stood at the door, dressed in her silk bed robe.

“Don? Is something wrong?” she asked in a soft voice, giving him a look of concern.

“No. I just…couldn’t sleep.”

“I know. It’s been a hellish day,” she said. “Come back to bed? It’s terribly late.”

He shook his head. “Don’t think I can,” he said, and took a last glance at the sleeping city before letting the curtain fall down over the window again. “Laura, what…what is all of this?”

She sighed and sat down on a chair nearby.

“It’s what comes along with having a markie child, Don. It comes with having him be too strong to be held. With getting cuts here and there because he can’t control his powers,” she said, clenching her hands into fists. “With having to know that something terrible may happen at any moment. Any day. And all of that will never stop. It will never go away.”

Don sat down on the chair across from her. He felt defeated. As if his dream of being a father had suddenly become a nightmare. Laura reached out and placed her hand over his.

“It’s fine. He doesn’t know yet,” she said, giving him an encouraging smile. “He doesn’t have to know. I can tell him that his father died, and he won’t blame you for not wanting to get involved in his life.”

Don looked up at her, and noticed behind her a reflection of his own face staring back at him from the glass of the window.

“Of course not,” he said, holding her hand. “I’m just in shock from everything. I’ll tell him. I’ll tell him in due time. After we catch whoever is trying to frame him.”

“Don…”

“I’m just…That man Jorah… I mean, men… And then that man, out of anyone else!” he said, shaking his head and trying to explain himself, but his worries spun one after the other in his head so fast that he couldn’t put it all into words.

“Oh, Jorah was the nicest kid when they were at the orphanage. So well educated and with perfect manners. Eiran was always clinging to him since they were children.”

“And women? Has Eiran ever…”

“I’ve never seen him get close to any.”

Don pursed his lips. Considering Eiran’s age now, it was unlikely that he might change his mind about that subject then. But even considering that, his choice of men worried him.

“But…Isn’t Jorah a bit…You know, he looks a bit rough.
