Chapter Nineteen: Maddie

Maddie arrived back at Morton Hall midway through semester two orientation week. She was glad to get away from Point Alice, but felt like she was walking out of one frying pan into another. Her eyes darted about her as she wheeled her suitcase from the car up into Morton Hall. Her laptop bag bumped against her hip and her anxiety level rose with each step. Her heart was thumping as she pushed her case in front of her, out of the lift and along the corridor. She opened the door of her room to find a few funny welcome back notes from friends, announcements from the Uni and various clubs, and a pamphlet for a self-defence course for women. The pamphlet grabbed her attention. Maybe that was what she needed to help her gain some confidence. She could do with the exercise after five weeks of eating, drinking and sitting around at Point Alice.

Ben and Danielle dropped by in the afternoon as Maddie was emptying her bag and settling in.

“Hey Mads, how was your break?” The three of them had a big group hug.

“It’s so nice to see you guys. Break? Yeah, same old. Claustrophobic parents, demanding boyfriend, blah blah. What about you guys? What did you get up to?”

Ben shook his head dismissively as he said, “Oh, nothing exciting.” He placed his hand on Maddie’s arm in a confidential manner. “Darling, that recalcitrant boyfriend of yours … I’ll take care of him for you. I’ve seen his picture on Facebook. You just say the word and I’ll turn him so quickly it will take his breath away.”

They all laughed. “Thanks Ben, but I’ve got to learn to fight my own battles. What about you Dannie? What did you and Luke get up to?”

Danielle shrugged. “Nothing major. We went to the snow for a few days with his family, that was fun.”

“Sounds great — cold but great.” Maddie turned to her desk. “That reminds me, have you guys seen this?” She held up the pamphlet for the self-defence course.

“No, what is it?” Danielle took the pamphlet and studied it. “Where did you get it?”

“It was under my door — didn’t you guys get one?”

They both looked blank and shook their heads.

Maddie frowned. “That’s odd. Anyway, I think it might be just what I need, after … well … you know.”

“After being drugged?” Danielle spelt it out.

“Yeah, after being drugged. I know it probably wouldn’t have helped me then, but still …”

“Yeah Mads, sorry, but you are a bit of a mouse. You can’t rely on prince charming saving you every time. Maybe this is just what you need to find your inner beast.”

“Thanks Dannie, will you join me?”

“Ah, no thanks, I think I’m very aware of my inner beast.”

“What about you Ben?”

“If it involves movement and it’s not dancing or sex, I’ll pass. Too many sweaty bodies … not what I want to experience when someone throws me on the floor.”

“I think it’s only for women, anyway.” Danielle finished reading and handed the brochure back to Maddie.
