Chapter Thirteen

Once I was on the train , my message alert went off, and I dug around in my bag, thinking it was going to be Lexi. But when I glanced down at the screen, and saw Blake’s name, a repulsive chill raced through my body. I didn’t even bother opening the message. I just threw my phone back inside my bag, and ignored it, clenching my teeth.

Fucking asshole.

Walking up St. Georges Terrace, I was already regretting wearing my suit jacket. I didn’t take into consideration it was going to be a warm day. I stopped half way to work, and removed it, slinging it over my bag.

When I entered the sliding doors on the Central Park building, I was half expecting to see Jaxon standing at the bank of elevators. I breathed a sigh of relief when I didn’t see him. But when I piled in the elevator with a dozen, or more, of the other professionals who worked in the building, I began to get nervous.

What the fuck am I going to say if he tells me I have to do another shoot? What excuse can I come up with? C’mon, Ali, think!

My mind was a blank...I was just too tired to come up with anything, except to cross my fingers, and hope like hell I didn’t have to, when the elevator doors opened on my floor.

“’Morning, Alison,” Christine greeted cheerfully as I stepped off the elevator, startling me.

I forced a smile as a greeting in return, before I hurried down to Jaxon’s office, catching the slight frown of uncertainty forming on her brow from the corner of my eye when I disappeared from her view.

My heart started thumping, and I was finding it difficult to breathe. What the fuck is wrong with me?
