Chapter 16

Danrolfe stood motionless atop the grassy cliff overlooking a small town known for its mix of races. Those who did not want to live in the large, bustling kingdoms and surrounding crown cities came to this place for some peace and quiet. Shifters, nymphs, dwarves, and even humans lived in this town. It was rural, clean, and everyone seemed to live a harmonious existence.

Danrolfe’s lip curled in a sneer.

Idiots, all of them.

His thoughts shifted to the humans, their weapons, and their stolen powers from the daemons.

I’m an idiot…

He closed his eyes as the screams from the town reached his sensitive ears. Now he had been roped into fighting with those he detested, and for what? He destroyed his family, was exiled from his home, and now he couldn’t even rid himself of the human filth who had caused all of this.

Danrolfe shuddered as he thought of going against Orion’s orders. The mysterious male’s powers were obviously great, and he had a sinking feeling he hadn’t even seen all of Orion's abilities. The thought of Orion working for the humans angered him, but something was still off about that.

The white-haired male had laughed at aligning himself with the human king, acting as though his allegiance lay elsewhere. But why then did he use Spellweavers and Shells like the humans? On top of all of those things, Danrolfe was still unsure why he felt so certain he had seen Orion at the summit.

Maybe I’m just losing it. Perhaps it was my imagination.

Danrolfe rubbed his hand roughly over his face, refusing to think on these things any longer. From what Orion had said, as long as he followed orders, he would have the power to create a new home. A new place for shifters, a place without the humans and their weapons.

He opened his amber eyes to see flames rising high in the evening sky––the once quaint town now burning to ashes. The Spellweavers used their powers to incapacitate those who fought back, and the Shells devoured the weak. They had rampaged through the countryside for the past month, and it ended the same every time––burning buildings, lives lost, and new recruits for his makeshift army.

His numbers had been small when this all started, around thirty, including the abominations Orion had gifted him. Now, he had over two hundred soldiers under his command. He would be lying to say he didn’t enjoy the role he had been placed in, disconcerting as it may be.

“Alpha?”

Getta’s hard voice intruded on his thoughts, and he glanced behind him at the male bowing lowly.

“Those able to fight have been gathered.”

Getta straightened, his face grave.

“And?” Danrolfe asked, turning fully to walk the path toward the town.

“The Spellweavers are planning another summoning tonight.”

Danrolfe’s body went rigid.

“Again?” he growled.

He hated the Summoning ritual. Though he detested humans, seeing them be sacrificed to awaiting daemons in exchange for gifted powers was unsettling and often very bloody.

“Some of the other soldiers were deeply disturbed by the last summoning. What should we do?”

Getta sped up his pace to catch up to the Alpha.
