Chapter Thriteen

Danika sprung from the car and rushed up the steps to her office building before Mason’s feet even hit the pavement.

“My Lord,” he yelled. “Danika.”

The receptionist didn’t have time to greet her before Danika stepped in the elevator and heading up to her office. She could just hear William’s soft voice saying “good morning” to the receptionist as the doors closed.

Danika leaned against the far wall and blew out a sigh. The car had been so warm, she plucked her shirt from her chest, trying to clear her head of Mason.

It was a good thing he’d be gone today with Ike and Siad. As much as it made her gut clench to think he wouldn’t be near her, she’d get nothing accomplished after what had transpired between them the night before. It’d taken her hours of tossing and turning before she’d finally stopped wanting the touch of his large calloused hands and lush lips. But the moment he’d stepped out of his room that evening, the desire had rushed through her body faster than if she’d shot his blood straight into her veins. The elevator opened, and Mason stared at her, in the waiting area, arms folded.

She stormed past him and to her office. “What, did you run up the stairs?”

“That wasn’t very smart. The Vampire from last night could have been in here.”

“I doubt it.” She pushed past him, entered her office, and flipped on her computer. She’d woken up so irritable that she got the sinking feeling her fertile period drew near. She fought to keep the edge out of her voice as her level of patience plummeted with each passing moment. “I thought you were off with Ike and Siad this evening.”

“I wanted to make sure you were safe first.”

“Well, I am. Now go on your boy-scouting expedition.” She waved him off, keeping her eyes on her email box.

“My what?”

“Never mind, go. I have meetings.”

He looked at her for a minute longer, then turned to go. “Don’t leave the building without me… please,” he said forcefully.

“I won’t.”

He exchanged information with William and headed off. She checked her watch— forty minutes until her meetings. William approached with her messages and a stack of documents.

“Have you received an email yet from Chase?”

“No, My Lord.”

Picking up her phone, she dialed Chase’s extension.

“Good evening.”

“I need you to send William the file please,” she said without pleasantries.

“I came in early this evening to do that for you. But it seems that it’s corrupted. I’ve sent down to the permits department for a new list. It should be here in the next day or two.”

Great! “Please send it to William as soon as it arrives.”

“Absolutely.” He paused. “Are you all right, Nika? Anything I can help you with?”

“Thank you, no. Please make sure you get someone up here to deal with your computer. We can’t afford to lose any more files.”

“That wouldn’t be good at all.”

She hung up the phone with less than thirty minutes left before she needed to be in the conference room.
