CHAPTER 14

TILLER

For three weeks, I’ve been ducking questions from my parents. They’re on my case, wondering where I’m spending all my time. It’s all a little alien to me.

I haven’t lived at home for seven years, so I think we’re all trying to learn to live together again, but at some point, I figure Leon and I will have to come clean.

My worry is I still don’t know how Dad will react to me dating one of his players.

Leon and I seem to have skipped through the awkward ritual of figuring out whether we’re just hanging out or friends with bennies, and I’m thankful for it. Being with him is easy and fun. I like everything I’m learning about him, and spending time with him is the best part of my day.

The sex is spectacular too. He’s curious and wants to try everything.

Our relationship is also seriously making me reconsider what to do next.

When I left Indonesia, I had no plans beyond spending time with my parents. I missed them. I also felt more at peace with my decisions years back and no longer had the urge to run and hide.

But whether that means I’m going to put my degree to good use, the jury’s still out. The thought makes me twitchy, while easing some of the tension I’ve been carrying.

“What are you huffing about over there?” Mom asks, walking into the sitting room where I’m flicking through Netflix.

Since I didn’t realize I’d been making noises, I shrug before turning off the TV. I’m waiting for Dad to get his ass into gear, as he’s driving me to practice. I’m also frustrated because Leon’s got study plans after training, so we don’t get to hang out.

Maybe I should pick up a second job or something. Keeping busy will help distract me from all the times I can’t see Leon. I’m so needy it’s on the verge of pathetic, but did I mention how much I like the guy?

“You know, if you’re bored, you could get a hobby or maybe go out and see some of your old friends.”

“Maybe. I’m not really in touch with anyone local,” I deflect. Sure, there’s my cousin Michael, but he’s recently started dating. There’s also a reason I haven’t stayed in touch with people from high school.

“How about reaching out to some of your college friends?” She takes a seat next to me. “You haven’t seen anyone since being back home. It’ll probably do you good.”

I raise my brows as I take her in. She’s already in her pj’s and has a paperback tucked under her arm. It’s the easiest way for her to unwind after a busy work shift. She’s a pathology assistant at the local hospital, so she regularly comes home drained.

“Are you saying I look pathetic and need to get out more?”

She shakes her head. “Hardly. I barely ever see you,” she says pointedly. “I can’t help wondering if someone’s holding your interest.”

Unbidden, heat burns my cheeks. Mom reacts immediately, grinning widely. “I knew it.
