CHAPTER 04
Jax felt a hell of a lot better as he walked back across the cracked dirt, beneath the baking sun, towards the generator building.
He still needed a shower, a change of clothes, more gear, a drinkâ¦
But he felt better. The painkillers and the sex, (which were their own form of painkiller), had helped his mental status a fuck of a lot. Which helped his physical status. His arm still hurt, but it didnât bug him too much. And having Signy around and on his side was a massive boost. One person could do a lot, two people could do a fucking shitload. Even having just one other person on his side was going to help him so much. Especially given how competent Signy was. He could already tell that about her. Besides the fact that she was a military pilot and they were known for having their shit together, everything about her spoke of confidence and certainty.
They reached the generator building and he looked at her amazingly fit ass as she checked out the equipment. The building wasnât very large, just a pair of rooms, one big, one small, that was packed with all sorts of gear and equipment. Lots of screens and flat, plastic keyboards on the walls. If pressed, Jax might be able to take a real whack at fixing the generator as a whole, and he might have a shot if the damage wasnât too bad or too complex, and he had an accurate readout of the problems. But he was more than willing to let Signy helm this part.
The way she moved about, inspecting the machinery, gave him confidence in her abilities.
About five minutes later, she returned, looking sour. âSo, thereâs a few parts missing. Important parts. Obviously someone was through and did a quick little strip job. Weâll need to replace them. That will take time, so Iâm shifting priority. Come on.â
She left the building and he followed.
They began walking back towards the central structure. âNow what?â he asked.
âSome of these buildings should have solar panels. If they havenât been scavenged. If we can activate even just a few of those, then it will help. Really, we need power before we can do pretty much fucking anything,â Signy replied.
âGood point,â he said.
They moved around the exterior of the building until they found a ladder. Climbing up it, they reached the flat top of the building and began hunting for solar panels. Almost right away, things didnât look good. They found evidence that solar panels had been here, and a decent number of them too, and theyâd also been harvested by opportunistic salvagers. They moved across the roof, sweeping it for more panels that might be tucked away in odd locations, and also looking over onto the roofs of other buildings.
It wasnât like they were exactly hard to miss.
In the end, they managed to find a grand total of one. There was just one small solar panel left on the roof of the central building.
âFuck,â Signy muttered, studying it.
