CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Ophelia’s first reaction to her father swinging his fist directly into James’ jaw was rage. A rush of heat coursed through her veins.

But as she stepped forward, ready to scream every expletive that she possibly knew at him, her body froze as James gripped her father by his neck. The room grew quiet, the only sound coming from Martin's lips as he sputtered.

"Don't."

He gritted his teeth.

"Do that."

His chest heaved.

"Again."

Ophelia knew the severity of the situation. She knew it was a big deal that her dad punched James. She knew that it was a big deal that James had a vice grip around his throat. Normal people would probably notice those things. But all she could focus on was how extremely fucking hot James looked while he was angry.

If no one else were here, she wouldn't waste any time climbing him like a tree.

James shoved her father away suddenly, pulling her from her distracting thoughts, readjusting his leather jacket as he shook his head in disbelief.

"Don't you dare go near our daughter again, do you hear me?" Martin growled as he rubbed his neck where James’ fingers once were. "This is the last time you'll ever see—"

"You need to stop worrying about me and focus on the relationship with your daughter, Mr. Clark. All you're doing is pushing her further away and you don't even care," James grumbled, pressing his finger to his lip that had started to bleed. "She deserves a hell of a lot more than the shit you two throw at her all the time."

Taking her bottom lip in between her teeth, Ophelia stared at James in awe, her clammy hands messing with the hem of her sweater as she watched him with adoration. No one had ever stood up for her, ever, and it only made her want to jump him more. That and—well, he was strangely attractive with a busted lip and a grimace etched into his features.

If her panties weren't damp already, they were now.

You're going to hell.

She watched as James approached her gently; the grimace washing away as his eyes trailed over her face. His hand lifted as his finger caressed her cheek, licking the blood from his lip as his brow furrowed.

"You okay?" he asked softly. "You wanna go?"

Ophelia nodded a little too quickly, staring up at him through her lashes, utterly speechless.

"Ophelia Clark, you will not go with this man," Julie snapped, holding onto her father as if he wasn't the one who initiated getting choked out to begin with. "He is obviously dangerous—"

"Oh, shove it, Mother."

Taking James' hand in hers, Ophelia pulled him behind her as she walked out of the dining room, into the foyer, and out of the front door without another word from anyone. She didn't stop her determined trek until they were at the car again, climbing inside.

She would undoubtedly be hearing about this again through texts, calls, or random show-ups at Wren’s apartment—threatening to cut her off if they hadn't already by the end of today, but she didn't care.
