CHAPTER 13

REID

“Bathrooms, in general, make me uncomfortable,” Atticus says, crossing his arms after leaving my bathroom. He doesn’t like this line of questioning, but I’ve pushed him hard enough that he’s reluctantly giving me an answer. “Anything done in a bathroom is personal. It weirds me out. The whole room. If I could pretend there were no bathrooms in houses, I’d be better off.”

“But things done in a bedroom aren’t personal?” I raise a brow, desperate to understand how his mind works, but also loving the hypocrisy of his thoughts.

“I don’t shit in a bedroom, Reid!” He throws his arms up. “I don’t brush my teeth in a bedroom. I don’t get naked and stand under hot water that makes my skin red in a bedroom!”

“But you get naked, and I make your skin red.” I smirk.

“I choose that. It’s not my body’s biological functions.”

“So, you don’t like to think about shitting?” I laugh.

“I don’t even like the word shit when it is in reference to… that.”

Noted. Scrubbing it from my vocabulary. “That why you always… prep?”

“Yes,” he hisses, cheeks on fire. “Can we talk about something else now? Literally anything else.” He pushes his glasses up all awkward-like. “I hate Tuesdays.”

“What’s with your hate for Tuesdays?” I sit on my bed, watching him skirt the perimeter of the room, letting him choose when he’s comfortable enough to come in on his own.

“Everything bad in my life has happened on a Tuesday.”

“Even me?”

“Especially you,” he huffs. Then he scoffs to be dramatic. “You’re the worst because I didn’t see you coming, and then I gave in like a folding chair. You made me bend, and I hate you for it.”

Doesn’t hate me enough to really push me away, so it’s still a win. “Tell me one bad thing that happened on a Tuesday.” I ease myself back, leaning against the headboard with my legs out straight, hoping he’ll come sit with me.

He leans against my desk, not at all exuding that same confidence from earlier. “I left home on a Tuesday. My dad… on a Tuesday. I got the rejection letter from my first choice university on a Tuesday.”

“What was your first choice?” I leave the dad comment alone for now, but it’s itching at me.

“Cambridge.”

“England?”

“Yes, Reid. England.” Eye rolls. Lots of them.

“Why?”

“To see somewhere new. I’m alone here, so I might as well be alone somewhere I’ve never been before.” He pushes off the desk, slowly walking towards my bed. He sits at the very end, only half his ass cheek on the mattress.

“No friends?”

“I’m not really friend material. I’m flaky. Push people away. Can’t rely on me.” He shrugs. “For how popular you are, you don’t seem to have many friends.”

Fair point. “Ryan is probably my only real friend. The rest are just… acquaintances. Why are you being shy?”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. Come here.”

“I don’t need to be touching you all the time.” He wrings his hands together, but he crawls up the bed until he’s beside me.
