Daeshim

* * *

Earth burst out of the stone mold he seemed to be cast in and dropped low, rushing at Beau like a wild bull.

I leaped forward, but Earth had a head start, catching Beau around the waist and rushing him backward, slamming him into the wall across the room so hard the window rattled.

Beau didn’t fight at all. He let himself be pinned and stayed upright on his feet as Earth’s fist drew back to deliver a blow.

Over my dead body.

I caught his fist, crushing it in mine, and wrenched his arm behind his back. He gave a shout, shoulder dropping toward the floor, and I squeezed his fist tighter. Twisting my free hand into the black hair on his crown, I yanked, forcing his face up so I could snarl down.

“Don’t make me do something I don’t want to do.”

Earth struggled against my rough hands, and Neo rushed around the couch like he would help him. Making a rude sound, I shoved Earth back, making him tumble into Neo. I didn’t wait to see how they handled their collision, too busy whirling around to face Beau.

Wide, incredulous eyes latched on to mine, and oh, what I saw in their expression… Not fear. Not anger. Not even resolve.

Vulnerability.

His lower lip jutted out. “I thought you changed your mind.”

See what happens? You see what happens when I try and listen to what he wants? Ten minutes without me touching him, and he decides I’m abandoning him.

With a rough sound, I dragged him forward, pushing his face into my neck and locking my arm around his waist, embracing him as if I could banish any and all space between us. “I told you I’m not going anywhere,” I said. “Even when you act like an asshole and refuse to let me touch you.”

A broken sob pressed against my throat. I could feel his hands clench and unclench with the desire to wrap around me, but he wouldn’t let himself.

“By the way, I’m not listening to you anymore,” I said, pulling back enough to kiss the side of his neck.

He shuddered, burrowing closer.

Yeah, we all had messed-up lives. Except Ethan. Freaking richie. So it wasn’t really a surprise Beau was no different, but oh, this hit hard. Worse than even the most heinous of crimes I’d committed or punishments I’d endured. This was somehow so devastating.

I wasn’t much for kids, but not even I could stand the thought of a tiny red-haired, freckle-faced boy wanting someone to like him.

No wonder he kept to himself. No wonder he never asked for anything. No one had ever given him anything, and when they did, they took it all back.

And that foster father? His fate was sealed.

“I want you, and that’s not going to change,” I vowed, keeping my voice for him and him alone.

One of his hands pushed between us so he could take a fistful of my shirt and twist.

“Move out of the way, Hyung,” Earth intoned from behind.

Beau started to pull back, but I held him tighter, lifting my head to glare over my shoulder.
