Ihave the distinct pleasure of being assigned to Saturday night patrol; a shift the majority of the squad detests. They’d rather be out at the Goldenleaf bar with everyone else, dancing until their feet hurt and drinking until they’re staggering back to the dorms. I used to live for those kinds of Saturday nights, but lately, they’ve lost their luster. Tonight, all I really want is a little peace and quiet to think.

Avery tried to talk me out of taking this patrol when I asked her to put me on the schedule, but it’s not like she had any shortage of people willing to give up their spot on the Saturday shift. So here I am, waiting on the practice field for my partner to show, eager to head out into the woods and begin our rounds.

As I glance around in search of him, I’m surprised to find Tristan weaving his way through the other patrol-ready squad fighters, heading in my direction. I never would’ve guessed that he’d sign up for Saturday night patrol- but then again, Avery might’ve put him on the schedule just to mess with him. She’s devious like that.

“Hey,” he greets as he approaches me with a smile, running a hand over his freshly-buzzed head.

Tristan’s smile is without a doubt his best feature. It lights up his whole face, displaying two rows of straight white teeth as twin dimples sink into his cheeks on either side. It’s so much like his sister Sloane’s; the kind of smile that you can’t help but return.

“Hey, how’d you get stuck on Saturday patrol?” I ask, grinning up at him as he comes to a stop in front of me.

Tris rolls his eyes with a sigh. “Avery must think she’s being cute,” he mutters. “It’s alright though, because at least I’ll have good company, right?” He winks, nudging my shoulder with a fist.

I furrow my brow as I blink at him in bewilderment. “But I thought I was with Luke?”

He scrubs his hand over the top of his head again, blowing out a shallow breath. “Yeah, I saw on the list that you two were paired together, so I got him to switch with me.” His lips crease in a smirk, his shoulder lifting in a subtle shrug. “Dude kinda owed me one, since he accidentally shot my sister and all.”

I drop my gaze to the ground, heart squeezing painfully at the reminder of the accident at firearms training a while back. I wasn’t there, but part of me feels like if I was, if I’d returned to the squad at the outset of gun training and led it differently, it may not have happened. Not that I fault the others for setting up that drill as they did, I just wish Sloane never got hurt.

I also wish I’d stop being thrown curveballs by my patrol partners.

“What’s with everyone switching patrol buddies lately?” I grumble to myself.

“Huh?” Tris asks, and I glance back up to see him squinting at me in confusion.
