CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Attack

THE PATH LED DIRECTLY to a rock face and stopped. Flint stared at it. Why would an animal or person make a path that led nowhere? There was no cave or overhanging shelter to explain the deeply worn trail. He scratched his chin. “What do you think?” he asked.

Pushing his hair off his forehead, Halvor answered, “I don’t know. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Behind them, a horseshoe scuffed on rock. They whirled, weapons drawn.

“Where did you come from?’ Halvor demanded.

“I could see you,” Dell said. “You should have seen me.” He shrugged and gestured toward the rockface with his chin. “It’s a door,” he said.

“A door?” asked Halvor, his eyebrows drawing together.

However, Flint made the connection at once. Lowering his swords, he said, “Like the door you entered when you followed Lorund?” He swung around to examine the rock again. “How does it open?”

“You just have to know it’s there,” answered Dell. “Orma says the magic only works if you don’t know what you’re looking for...and then...well, all I did was push on it.” He dismounted. “We better prepare for a fight before we do that though.” He flexed the fingers of his gauntlet and examined the blades. Then with his right hand, he pulled each of his six daggers from its sheath, checked its edge and thrust it back again.

Flint wondered why he bothered. Dell had honed his blades endlessly as they sat by the fire the night before. Nonetheless, he followed his example, reaching back to draw his own swords. After the climb, his arms felt their weight. Suddenly uncertain, he ran through a series of drills.

Halvor, too, inspected his daggers, eyeing the serrated edges critically as he pulled each one free in quick succession. Sheathing his final blade, he met Flint’s eyes and asked, “Are you ready for this?”

Flint felt a rush of excitement. This could be his first real fight. He finished his drill and returned his swords to their sheaths in a hiss of metal. With a grin, he declared, “I’m ready.”

“No,” said Halvor, shaking his head. “I mean, are you ready to face whatever is on the other side of that door? It might turn out to be nothing, or it could be a Follower intent on killing you.” Halvor looked at him, all traces of his usual smile gone. “You need to be ready. Really ready. Ready to do anything to survive.”

Flint sobered. “I guess so,” he said. Suddenly, he did not feel so confident. His stomach tightened into a small, hard knot.

Dell held Flint’s eyes for a moment longer before nodding in approval. “That’s better,” he said. “You’re worried now. It’s never good to enter a fight thinking it’s a game. If you have to use those blades today, you’ll be fighting for your life. Do whatever it takes.”
