Chapter 12

Waking Up Is Hard To Do

THE LARGEST—and, admittedly, scariest—of the trio of angels facing him took two steps forward. EZ took three back.

While his mind registered that the huge, winged beings standing on the crumbling sidewalk just in front of him weren’t the terrifying inky soul-suckers who’d been chasing him, he still couldn’t get past the fact that they were just as scary.

EZ thought it might have been due to the fact that they were nearly as tall as the tanner’s building, which was three stories. Plus, they had massive, feathered wings, which made him wonder if they had talons too.

He glanced down, only to see they had on some sort of metallic boot. It was then he realized they were all wearing armor—not like the knight statues in the hall, but fancier, with designs carved into the metal plating. Ornate, he thought was the right word. Still, they were super intimidating.

Especially since they were armed with swords longer than he was tall.

Even though he should have been, EZ didn’t feel threatened by them, though he had to crane his neck all the way back just to see their faces. In fact, he felt somewhat comforted by the giants. Especially when the big guy in front smiled down at him. It wasn’t until that moment he noticed all three were glowing.

EZ’s mouth dropped open. “Friar?” he whispered when recognition hit him. The angel was dark blond like Friar, and even though he no longer had a beard, EZ could still see the resemblance. This dream just gets weirder by the second.

One of the angels behind laughed. “Is that what you’re calling yourself now, Sandy?” The big guy elbowed the other angel without looking at him, hitting the guy right in the chest, making him laugh.

“Shut it, Han.”

EZ blinked a few times as he stared at the angel he’d known as Friar. “Sa… Sandy?” he squeaked. The name sure didn’t fit the huge creature, other than the color of his hair.

Friar—or Sandy—tilted his head to one side. “First, what did I say about calling the angelic host ‘creatures’?” he asked sternly, though the corner of his lip twitched.

EZ thought that he really should be afraid, but he felt his own mouth wanting to lift in a grin.

“Sorry,” he said.

The angel lifted a shoulder, which was so massive, EZ thought he could lay on it lengthwise and still have toe wiggling room.

“My true name is Sandalphon,” he answered, then hooked a thumb over his shoulder. “My brothers call me Sandy, but you may call me Friark,” he added with a smirk that made EZ think he didn’t really appreciate the name but couldn’t do much about it.

“I’m Han,” the laughing angel said. His hair was so black, it looked almost blue. “Haniel, actually.”

He swept a huge hand toward the other one next to him. “That’s Netzach, but we call him Zach. Not to be confused with the other Zach, who is Zachariel.” The angel grinned at EZ, who couldn’t help but return the smile that time.
