CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
Chapter 30
Chapter 30
I did this for you
Merit was running down the streets of Shellytown. The little city (she liked to call it a city though if she was caught doing so in Desereen City she would probably be laughed at) was just as she remembered it. The public square was full of people, friends, and family. They were there to congratulate her on her calling to be a "Daughter of the One" and discuss with Merit her new duty to serve the Head Prerogative at him home in Desereen City. Her mother and father were there along with her sister Miriam and her husband, Tannis. The Head Called of Shellytown, Vinsivien Talc, was present, smiling and patting Merit on the back. She could see children laughing and playing, men laying bouquets of red roses and white lilies at the feet of the Tribute of the Lifegiver and she could see canvas clothed men walking through the public square on their way to the fields for a day of work. Everything was perfect in her perfect little world.
Merit felt something behind her. She turned around just in time to see someone walk by. Her heart quickened its pace. The figure had already passed by her and all she could see now was the back of the figures head, and his broad shoulders, as he walked away. Merit knew the man, but she didn't know what from. She ran after him. Something told her he would want to say goodbye to her as well.
She wanted him to say goodbye.
"Wait!" Merit called out to the mysterious man as he walked away from the crowd of Merit's loved ones. He was moving quickly. Merit ran after him. Her loved, focused on conversations with one another, didn't notice Merit had left.
"Wait! Please!" Merit shouted again. The man turned a corner out of the public square and was now walking down a narrow alleyway between two buildings. At the end of the alleyway was an open field with a worn dirt path traveling through it. Merit had walked the path many times. She knew it led to a grove of trees on the other side of the field. As she walked down the ally Merit could see where the path crossed the field and entered the trees. She didn't remember the tree line being so close to Shellytown. She remembered the field being much larger. She had to catch the man before he entered the trees.
"Please!" Merit shouted again. The man still gave no sign of having heard her. He seemed to be walking faster now. Soon he was now out of he ally and crossing the field. Merit ran faster. She pushed her body to its limits. The man grew closer. She was catching him! She continued to run and finally reached the man at the same moment he reached the tree line. Beyond him the forest was dark and foreboding.
"Please, don't you want to say goodbye?" Merit ask. She reached out and put her hand on the man's shoulder.
