Weather Forecast With The Weather Plug-In
If you want to be informed about the weather and the forecast for the next few days with every system, you can also activate the weather plug-in on the Raspberry Pi.
Seriously: The Raspberry Pi is more than busy with the XBMC, here we have also disabled the RSS treadmill in addition to the weather plug-in, so as not to permanently run the built-in CPU at 100% CPU utilization.
OpenELEC: Reduce High CPU Utilization
If you follow the discussions on the Internet in the OpenELEC forums on the most frequently encountered problems and demands, the topic of CPU utilization and memory utilization is on the top of the list. Here are the standard answers are always the same: disable unnecessary services, disable features such as weather frontend and RSS notifications - but the CPU load seems to remain high unabated.
Help is, however, a tip from an XBMC developer to draw attention in the right direction - as on a web page (http://thepcspy.com/read/how-fix-idle-100-cpu-issue-xbmc/) described on this topic. The reactivation of the so-called Dirty Regions should help to noticeably reduce the CPU load. If activated, only the changed menu areas will be recalculated, instead of rebuilding the entire menu on the screen.
If you are using the Samba configuration described in this book, you can easily access the network share /storage/.config via Windows Explorer, Mac OS X Finder, or other file managers. There you create a file named advancedsettings.xml. You can also do this via SSH in the console:
nano /storage/.config/advancedsettings.xml
Of course, you do not have to type the file completely. Download the file as a template from the OpenELEC project page and customize the entries.
Now restart XBMC and check if the created xml file is processed and used. In our case, we found only a slight decline in CPU utilization to 88% - not quite the resounding success. Incidentally, this was due to the fact that the resolution remained unchanged at 1,920 x 1,080. This should also remain so, since in the home network over the Raspberry Pi frequently HD streams must be transmitted and brought to the screen.
Spiegel Online, N24, Bild.de, YouTube, Süddeutsche.de and many more that present themselves on the internet and publish video material there, can also be integrated via XBMC as a video add-on. This will not only provide you with a clear overview of the videos of the corresponding offers, but also an advertisement-free and therefore comfortable presentation and navigation. The video add-ons can be easily installed via the XBMC homepage via video / video add-ons.
After download and installation, the plug-in provides the selected website as a video source.
If, for example, you have activated Spiegel Online's extensive video archive as a video source, you can first look at the sections defined there and then dig deeper into the archive from there.
In this example, the category Sport was selected by Spiegel Online, most of which was created in cooperation with the football magazine Kicker. There you will be informed daily about the events of the German Bundesliga and their clubs.
