Processing Cores

The third and final piece of information you will be told is how many cores the processor has (usually dual-core or quad-core, although some computers have more). Processing cores are not particularly good at multi-tasking. Therefore if you ask a single processing core to do two or more large tasks at once, you will usually see the responsiveness and speed of the second task slow down considerably. Having more than one core allows different tasks to be performed by different cores which speeds up the computer. Even if you don't feel like you are running too many programs at once, there are usually numerous background programs active.
