$ tail -f /var/log/messages

Once you type in the above command and press ENTER, it will display the contents of the messages file as the output. The tail command basically tells the system to look at the tail end of the messages file and keep it open so that if anything is added to it at the bottom, it will display those as well.

Go ahead and plug your thumb drive into any open USB port. If you don't have an open USB port, you will have to either use a hub or just unplug your USB mouse and do without it for now. Once you plug the drive in, you'll see a message pop-up saying that you have a new USB device available and that it is assigned to /dev/sda1. Keep in mind that the drive assignment may vary from system to system, so read the message that pops up carefully to know what your system allocates in your case. For the sake of having an example, we'll just assume that the system assigns your drive to /sda1.
