CHAPTER eleven

Camilla bit at her fingernails. It was only midway through her habit did she realize she had bitten off a much of the nail of her little, ring and middle finger. She cursed.

There was an email that came from the IMF three hours after she had transferred the funds for the land acquisition. She was still in the office, waiting for a call to come from its officer. All but her had gone home. Eric’s seat now empty was sight of relief. He had been going on and on about a dude he was going to meet at the club tonight, her temples having throbbed painfully with each word he uttered.

Now, all was silence, and she could focus.

Rao was not answering his call, just as she had feared. She risked tooth and limb to call him, at the expense of her job, but he had not answered.

Leaving him a few voicemails, she knew it was to no avail. Rao often relied on his Personal Assistants to answer his voicemails. It was ironic that the messages she sent was sent back to her.

She clicked on a button to her phone and listened to her own messages to Rao.

“Hey Mr. DeValle, I know that you are on vacation, and that you should not have been interrupted, but something happened just after the funds for the land acquisition was transferred. I received a call from the IMF, saying they wanted to speak to you. I already called the lawyers, and they said not to worry, and it is only standard protocol. But I just wanted to let you know too.”

“Mr. DeValle, Camilla again! Trust me, I would not call if I knew that it was unimportant, but this is! The IMF called me up again, and said that there was something that piqued their curiosity about a money trail? I’m not so sure what they meant. They said that you should be in town in the next few days for an interview. I told them that you were on vacation. *nervous laugh* But they did not seem to care. It sounded serious.”

“Mr. DeValle, this is serious. I’ve notified the lawyers because the IMF called me the third time in a span of 2 hours! They are not saying why, but the money funded to the account in the Maldives has also gotten attention from the CIA. IMF and CIA! They want to speak with me, because it was my authorization code on the transfer. Our lawyers are on standby, but we need you back, immediately. Please…”

Camilla sighed, listening to her own desperation. God, what kind of mess had they gotten themselves into this time? She notified Andrew Charleston who was still in Dubai, and all he could do was pant nervously on the phone. Useless man, she thought.

She then tried to call the most senior board of director after Rao, Sandra Lossier. It was no good too. Sandra’s personal assistant said that she would not be reachable until next week as she had gone back to Wisconsin to visit her grandchild.
