“I can’t wait to get a crack at Rose,” Hunter said. He moved down the row to more interesting “reading.” The magazines he wanted were on the top shelf in the back of the rack. He had to stretch to get one. Not for long. Hunter’s doctor said he hadn’t stopped growing yet.

He hoped he was still growing in other areas too. He knew he was already big, but there was nothing wrong with bigger.

“You know, sometimes you can be a real jackass,” Perry said as he followed. Every now and then Hunter let him get away with saying things like that.

“True,” Hunter agreed, picking up a Penthouse and flipping through the pages. “Now that’s more like it. Check this out.” Hunter held out the centerfold for Perry. A smokin’ blonde was spread eagle on the page. Perry didn’t look all that interested. He was too busy looking around the store. “What would you say? She’s a C? D? ”

“Hunter, you’re going to get us kicked out of here,” Perry said through clenched teeth.

“Chill,” he replied. “Like I ever come into the bookstore.”

“Well I do,” Perry said. “Put that away before the man-ager sees you.”

“Perry, you have got to calm down,” Hunter said. Sometimes his friend could be a real buzz kill. “Maybe we can get you to release some of that tension this afternoon.”

“Great,” he said with very little enthusiasm.

“You’re welcome.”

“Whatever.”

Perry wasn’t usually this rude when Hunter did something for him. Hunter thought it was almost like he didn’t want to go to the party. Sometimes, Perry confused the hell out of him. There were times Hunter wondered why he even stayed friends with him. But there were other times, many, many other times—forty-seven, if Perry really was counting—that it was obvious.

Not that that was the only reason he was friends with Perry. True, it was a great … fringe benefit. But Perry was useful in other ways too. He’d never admit this out loud, but Perry helped him out in the girl department … not that he needed any.

As weird as Perry could be sometimes, he always had a circle of girls around him wherever he went. It probably had to do with his threat level. It was nonexistent. He was like the safest guy in school. As long as Hunter hung with Perry, he seemed more credible by association. That association had helped him score a surprising number of times.

And he genuinely liked the guy too. “None of the girls at school look like that,” Hunter said as he put back the magazine.

“Airbrushed with implants?” Perry said. “Not exactly how I like them.”

“How do you like them?” Hunter asked. “We got a wide variety of girls to choose from this afternoon. Maybe you could hook up for once. You know, once the party’s over.”

“With whom?” Perry asked. “Gin? Jade?”

“They’re mine,” Hunter replied. “I meant one of the other girls.”

“Rose and Skye? Last I checked they were already taken.”

“How taken do you think they are if their boyfriends let them go to this party?” Hunter asked.
