As soon as the sky was fully light, the crew rushed to unfurl the sails and we raced across the Deeps. The wind was in our favor again, and by the afternoon, we were nearing enemy territory. The cloaking device hummed to life, and everything around us took on a slight waver, like the air over a pot of water just before it begins to boil.

Our destination was a little rocky island dangerously close to the mainland of the old country. The local spy would take a rowboat out at night when they had a message to deliver or once a week, whichever came first. They would also pick up any notes left for them.

We could make the exchange either day or night thanks to our cloaking device. The captain pulled the ship in close on the far side, and Sky eagerly volunteered to row the dinghy out to the island itself. So of course I asked to go with her.

The rocky mounds and sparse, shrubby trees that made up the island concealed the dinghy from view of the mainland. The sea was mostly calm, but the waves that crashed against the sharp rocks along the shore made navigation tricky.

I struggled to follow Sky’s commands, fighting with my oar and cursing a blue streak. A few times, I thought we were going to be dashed against the rocks, but we finally reached a sandbar and were able to drag the boat up onto the island itself.

We tied it to a bush for extra security and got out. I carried a small pot of glowing paint and a brush to mark the spot where we’d leave the message for the spy. He or she would come back in a day or two to pick it up, locating the bundle by the glowing circle on the rock above it.

Sky carried the carefully wrapped papers and shielded her eyes to scan along the mound of sand and rock that filled the center of the island. Several seabirds scattered, loudly complaining as we approached.

“So the drop-off point gets moved each time just in case, and it’s marked with an X.”

I glanced around. An X made with small rocks should stand out on such a small island, but large boulders obscured the view, so we had to make our way over several before Sky spotted the symbol.

“Ah, over there.”

The two lines of dark gray and brown rocks were laid over a tiny patch of grass that struggled to grow in the sandy soil between several boulders. As we got close, I saw that the grass in the center showed signs of being dug up.

“Go for it,” Sky said.

I passed her the satchel with the paint and brush and knelt to dig in the indicated spot. A few inches down, I found a bundle similar to the one Sky carried and pulled it out. I was tempted to read it, but this was official secret information, not a book for me to enjoy. I tucked
