Race the Sun

The cockiness faded away, and Quinton shook his head slowly.

“You really don’t get it, do you?”

“I guess not, but that doesn’t mean I need you spell it out for me.”

He understood much more than Quinton thought he did, but he wasn’t going down that road, and he was tired of dancing around the issue.

Part of him was flattered that Quinton wanted him so much, but the cowboy had approached it all wrong, and Jade had nothing further to say on the subject.

Pushing away from the wall, he pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed quickly, waiting with bated breath as it began to ring.

“Hello?” an uncertain voice answered.

“Hey, it’s me.” Jade grinned softly, ridiculously relieved just to hear Archias’s voice. “How you doing, baby?”

“Hello, my draga. It is very odd to hear your voice but not see you. How is the tournament going? Will you be home soon?” Archias sounded excited for his return, something Jade could definitely get used to, though he knew he shouldn’t feel that way.

“It’s going great.” His anxiety and uncertainties vanished as he outlined some of his more difficult shots. “Oh, it was priceless. You should have seen his face when I jumped his three ball, banked it off the cushion, and kissed the eight ball into the side pocket.”

Archias’s laughter was full of unrestrained joy. “I do not understand anything you said, but I am happy that you are happy.”

Damn, it was going to be hard to let the man go. “So, how has your day been? How are the DVDs going?”

“Eric has long hair in these first ones.” Archias sighed dreamily, and Jade bit his tongue to hold in his chuckle. “I will miss this when I must go back to the pehar,” Archias added sadly. “There are many things I will miss, but this, I will miss most.”

He would miss television the most. Not Jade. The realization was like a sucker punch to his gut, and his mood plummeted rapidly.

“Yeah.” Jade didn’t know what else to say. He would miss Archias more than he could express, but knowing the feeling wasn’t mutual 98

finally gave him the courage to insert that bit of distance he’d been dreading. “I gotta go. I have one more round, so I should be home before you go to sleep. I’ll see you then.”

“I will wait up,” Archias assured him. “Good luck, Jade.”

Disconnecting the call, Jade shoved his phone into his pocket and just stood there feeling numb. Amazing how he had gone from scared to annoyed, to happy, to depressed in the span of ten minutes. In a few short weeks, Archias would be gone, and Jade desperately needed to figure out how to let him go.

“Why the long face, Blevins?” Quinton appeared out of nowhere, and his long fingers reached out to trace Jade’s jaw. “You look like you lost your only friend.”

Jade jerked away. “You can’t get in my head, Quinton. Just give it up.”

An exasperated sigh parted his lips. “I don’t care about the damn game, Blevins.
