Another benefit associated with the use of small-group structures is the opportunity for teacher monitoring and coaching of individuals and groups. As teachers walk around the classroom, listening in on student dialogue, they can provide on-the-spot coaching by making comments and using other scaffolds described in Chapter 3. Additionally, teachers can formatively assess both student understanding of content and their use of discussion skills, taking notes for later feedback to students and for planning next steps.
The use of structured small groups also allows the flexibility for differentiation when needed. For example, the teacher can assign different reading passages to match reading levels of different groups of students; plan in advance to work with a group of students who need intensive coaching in content; or allow students who have mastered core knowledge and skills to engage in a more open, student-driven discussion to go deeper in their thinking.
