MACHO MASCULINITY VERSUS GAY FEMININITY

In general, the ways in which my informants were acting out their sexualities can be said to adhere to and re-establish dominant discourses in their chosen sport; especially in the case of homophobic discourses acted out among those living as “closeted” gays in this study. Many studies of the practice of masculinity in sport call attention to heteronormative and homophobic aspects in sports (Connell, 1995). The male informants in my study confirm that homophobia or homo-negativism appears as a decisive element in the corroboration of a desired masculinity in sport. This is manifested in many ways in male bonding rituals: by cracking jokes, as harassment in the locker rooms, as remarks from the coach, aimed at athletes in order to rouse greater effort in their performances, or as the boundary line between, on the one hand, acceptable body contact and sexual acts, and on the other, homoerotic or homosexual contacts. For the informants in this study, the possibility of sexual acts with one’s sports companions can be experienced as very unpleasant, as something they want to avoid, since any such behavior would be threatening to heteronormative discourses of male bonding, S has never experienced any acting out of sexuality within his group of sports friends:
