Chapter Six: Fresh Water

One thing about the Advanced Hack & Slash combat system: it was not built for mass combat. You had to roll initiative for every single warrior per turn, and they rolled every single round of combat, and they rolled a different initiative die per attack. So, if you had one guy who attacked 3/2 times per round, then they’d roll two initiative dice on the first round to determine when each of their two attacks were, then three initiative dice on the second round to determine when each of their three attacks happened, and then it alternated like that until the combat was done.

And that was just for one guy.

And that was just for initiative! It wasn’t even bringing up the attack rolls, damage rolls, save versus spell effects, save versus area damage, save versus bleeding and save versus pain rolls that everyone had to make every few rounds. Then there was tracking ammo, tracking positions, tracking any ongoing status effects for spells, morale, leadership and honor.

Fortunately, Marc wasn’t running this battle. As far as he could tell, the big GM in the sky didn’t mind having to roll fifty billion dice because the first few seconds after the Sardukar lasgun cut the door open was made of pure pandemonium. The gates of Queen Rasputin’s ice castle crashed inwards and her loyalist soldiers sprinted inwards, screaming their war cries and firing their beams of freezing energy from their icekets. Several converged on one of the heavily armored Nazi stormtroopers – flash freezing their armor and trapping them in a brick of ice the size of the average Aryan. At the same time, the Nazis shot back, several of them diving for cover, others staying standing and bellowing their own war cries.

Bullets met ice. Blades met rifle barrels. And through it all, Kevin was standing in the melee, shouting orders to the traitor ice troopers and Nazis surrounding him. Marc closed his eyes – and the screaming clamor of the battle vanished as he snapped into his inventory menu.

“Ah, I can think now,” he muttered, navigating to his spell list, just to check.
