Twenty-Eight: Dying to Know

You have died.

You have learned two new Divinity abilities: Annihilation and Deconsecrate.

Caitlin sat up. She was back in the Dungeon, on the elevator room where she’d respawned last time. It didn’t make sense, since she’d left the Dungeon when her stupidity had gotten her killed, but she was too mad and distraught to worry about that.

“Why?” she asked. “Why did I do it?”

“Short answer: you got a wee bit overconfident,” Trivelin said, still in moppet form.

“Arrogant, you mean,” she replied angrily. She was mostly angry at herself for double-dipping and dying, but also at the miserable universe she’d been dragged to. “I was arrogant and stupid.”

“Well, yeah. You’ve broken the rules a bunch of times already, so why not bend them one more time? It had to catch up to you at some point.”

“Like now.”

“It was close, by the way. There was a fifty-fifty chance you would have gotten away clean. Maybe if you’d had a little more rest, it would have been like eighty-twenty in your favor. But you are tired and still processing a lot of stuff, like gaining a new Aspect. And so, stuffing your head with not one but two new powers was the final straw that exploded your brain. Hmm, don’t think the metaphor works with brains.”

“I get it.”

“Not to mention your Mana channels are messed up. What did you do, plug yourself into a ley line? Those meridians of yours are extra crispy!”

“I raised one of my attributes a little too much.”

“Like how much?”

“Like seven.”

“Seven points? That’s nothing.”

“Hundred.”

“Seven hundred.”

“Yeah.”

“Which attribute, may I ask?”

“Constitution.”

“That probably saved your life. Any other stat and you would have gone up like a Roman candle. Raising Constitution strengthened your body just enough for you to handle the surge and survive. Still turned you into deep-fried vittles on the inside, though.”

“I don’t get it. I’ve spent over a thousand Mana on myself before. Healing myself and stuff.”

“Altering your body isn’t the same, kiddo. Healing is about restoring your body back to factory specs. Enhancing your body changes it; you’re pumping yourself up. Kind of like inflating a tire. Put too much air in, and something will blow out. In this case, the tire was strong enough not to pop, but the pipes delivering the air weren’t.”

“Okay. I screwed up when I did that, and now I can’t use Mana for like three days. And today I screwed up and died for the second time. And I lost all my XP.”

“At least you had some XP to lose. If you get killed at 0 XP, you lose even more Identity and go to negative XP.”

“Thanks. Anyway, I did get the two abilities. Let’s see what they do,” Caitlin said, checking her notifications.

Annihilation (Divinity Rank 3): You can show your displeasure by striking down those who offend you. By spending 1 Quintessence point, you will unleash a bolt of Quintessential energy that inflicts Willpower x 6 points of damage, ignoring all Physical, Elemental and Force defenses.
