Roe
Turning out of the bathroom, I headed down the hallway not paying the slightest attention to where I am going. My eyes are glued to my phone and the updates from the pandemic. Global numbers are climbing and despite the conversation I had with Austin earlier, I still feel guilty. I could be with my colleagues at the hospital keeping my friends and neighbors safe. I am so distracted that I didnât see the shadow move until it was too late and I crashed smack into a very hard chest. Austin. Again.
âMmphf.â
I donât know why I keep wanting to touch him. Thereâs tension between us, even with a sort of uneasy truce but thereâs also something else. Between crying on him out on the balcony and sitting comfy in his lap, something has awakened that is causing me to see Austin differently.
Austin is less subtle. I catch the longing looks he sends me, when he thinks Iâm not looking. He caught me checking him out earlier and it felt awkward, almost taboo. Like itâs somehow wrong to check out the man I used to know as the plague of my life because a decade has passed? Austin is confusing and so are the sparks he keeps sending out.
Heâs also half naked and standing in front of me, leaning against the door jamb and looking like sex on a stick and eyeing me like heâs starving and Iâm dessert. Oh good. More complications.
âItâs late, Austin. What do you want?â The tone came out shorter than I had intended and I inwardly wince.
âYou.â
He says it so matter of factly that I do a double take. Heâs not the emotional, broken, lost boy right now. Heâs a fully grown man and Austin-the-man definitely gives me butterflies that confuse the hell out of me.
âAnd if I am not on the menu?â
He grins at me and saunters my way, reaching across me and brushing his arm across my breasts, causing me to let out a tiny, involuntary moan of delight. He grabs a mug with the word âYouâ on it and waves it at me.
âOh.â
Heâs still standing so close to me, I can smell the minty freshness of his toothpaste and I feel my cheeks heat.
âDid you want me to mean something else?â He asked, his voice husky and low.
The embarrassment of the situation makes me fall back to my angry mode and I shove him back and ignore the cheap thrill I get from touching him.
âNo. But clearly you worded it that way for a reason.â I sound petulant and whiny but he steps closer to me, almost as if heâs daring me to close the distance between us. Itâs getting harder to deny that there is an attraction between us.
âAnd why, dear Roe, would I do that?â
I falter, his presence is slightly overwhelming and I stumble over my words.
âChemistry? Your own cheap amusement?â
âDo you think we have chemistry, Roe?â
His voice is low and rasping. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that I could have him if I want him.
