Chapter 6
Walla Walla Ding Dong
Wally wasnât kidding about the card tricks. She had a deck in her pocket that sheâd taken from her ship, and she did a few standard tricks Iâd seen in old videos on the net. Only she used her powers to cheat the illusion, so there was no way of really guessing where the cards would appear during each trick. One time, she shrank the card in question and revealed that it was inside her helmet, stuck to the glass. A second time, she pulled the missing card out of her boot. It was slipped behind the tongue, and I laughed when it got stuck, ruining the fluidity of the trick. She tugged like a clown on the stuck card, and when she finally yanked it free, petals burst in our faces, spiraling over us in a riot of color. I stared at the colorful rain like a girl, laughing and trying to catch the flower petals in my hands. I caught Qorthâs eye through the hail of petals, and she was looking at me with such soft affection, I think she would have kissed me if not for her stupid helmet. I began to hate her headgear with a passion.
After our field trip to the cave, I started helping Qorth in her hunt for parts, which seemed to make her happy. Doing so kept my mind occupied and kept me from worrying about the Skuzzies, and in hindsight, I believe that was her intention all along.
We drove out to different ruins together, hunting through old, dilapidated Walmarts and Radio Shacks. Qorth always needed something weird, like the motor from a blender or an old eggbeater.
As the days went by, I continued falling slowly and surely in love with an alien. We laughed together over the same stupid crap and I was surprised when she loved all my favorite movies, and her company was so good, I didnât want to let her go. I think I . . . got used to her. It started getting hard, imagining the farm without her bad singing every morning, and I wasnât sure I could go back to watching movies without her arms to curl up in.
But I was scared too. Iâd been there before, in that place where people think theyâre in love. Except the fire of love is burning so bright, it can blind you. It can blind you to the truth. So I kept telling Qorth she didnât have to stick around, that she could move on with her mission. She insisted she could not, that I was still in trouble and that she must be there to help me out of it.
âHelping you against your enemy is the only way to free myself of my debt to you!â Qorth called from the kitchen one night. Weâd been bickering about whether or not she should move on yet again, and out of the blue, she had insisted on cooking spaghetti. I gave up protesting and let
