As soon as Mark began his training with the National Security Agency, they’d both gone to the range together to practice. Mark did it to hone his skills to further his career, but Matherson did it purely to blow off steam. Unfortunately for the five running his way, he’d become a pretty good shot.

Matherson knew not to rush his shots, as he only had seven shells left. With his breathing steady, he picked his targets as they barreled his way.

One by one, he placed rounds center of mass in the screaming dervishes rushing his way, but he wasn’t fast enough.

Two of the five made it past his barrage and hit him like a freight train, forcing the wind from him as he was driven to the dirt.

As he slammed to the ground, the gun flew from his hand to land somewhere in the dark tunnel behind him.

Now fists were pounding his face, ribs, and torso, overwhelming him with pain. Even if he wanted to fight back he couldn’t, because he still couldn’t catch his breath, and his arms were pinned by his side.

A particularly powerful blow made contact with the side of his forehead, and for a brief moment, everything switched off in his head.

He was out, but in a split-second, his brain rebooted. To his surprise, he was no longer being pummeled, and there only appeared to be one Cristea berserker on him now.

He then saw El lunge forward and drive something down into the shoulder of the man still atop him. The man howled with pain, and El drove the object down at him again, this time between his eyes.

The dead man toppled off him, and El quickly helped Matherson to his feet, then retrieved the gun.

Matherson was still dazed, but he accepted the pump-action when El thrust it into his hands.

“Point it that way,” El said as she gestured toward the woods.

Just then, a roar erupted from the darkness, and they froze. They waited for the Lollipopman to make his move, but it never came.
