At its most basic level, when this justification is used by delinquents it makes sense and it is something many people will recognise as an excuse they have used. âEveryone else was doing it, so donât blame meâ. When used by soldiers to account for why they raped and killed someone the justification is more troubling. However, as Cohen notes there is another version of this denial of responsibility that is more chilling still. The argument that if you were there you would do the same is the most disturbing of all. As Cohen says this âclaim is frighteningly plausibleâ (Cohen 2001: 91).
