Entering the cabin, I step through the porch into the kitchen. Sheâs making a pot of tea in one of my hoodies and a pair of joggers that fit like leggings on her. Sheâs never looked so good as she does right now, in my kitchen, wearing my clothes.
âHey, Red.â
âHi, I borrowed your clothes. I hope thatâs okay. Some of mine are still back at your place in the wash. Well, Danâs place.â
I step towards her. My hand cups her cheek, tilting her face towards me. âThey look a damn sight better on you than they do me.â My lips press against her button nose. âItâs a shame Iâm going to rip them off.â
Her lip curls in the corner. âNot yet. Let me make you something to eat.â
âI have everything I want to feast on right here.â My lips trail her jaw, over the pulse in her neck, then along her shoulder as I pull the hoodie open as much as it will go.
âHave you eaten at all today?â Her brow furrows into something of concern. The last person to worry about whether Iâd eaten was Ma. It feels good to have someone want to take care of me too, as much as I want to be the one taking care of her.
âI had breakfast.â
She scowls at me. âDom, that was like ten hours ago. Iâm making you something to eat.â
I sit on the worktop admiring how she takes over the kitchen and looks at home in my space, making me a chicken sandwich. She pulls a bottle of red from the wine rack, one I bought earlier. âHere, make yourself useful.â
âRed wine and a chicken sandwich? Kind of an odd pairing donât you think?â I rummage through the drawer for a corkscrew, knowing there has to be one in here somewhere.
âLike cheese toasties and milk?â She chews on her lip, watching me pop the cork. âHow did you even know I drink this? You had it at your place too. I never told you my favourite brand of wine. Did you research my shopping habits, too?â
I pour us both a glass with a silent chuckle, but she doesnât miss how my shoulders shake. âI saw an open bottle at your flat when we went that day.â
âOh. That would make more sense.â Her giggle is the cutest fucking thing Iâve ever heard.
âI want to hear that laugh more often. I want this place to be full of laughter.â Jumping from the worktop, I kiss her button nose. âJust like it used to be.â
Her fingers run along the bristles on my jaw. âDid you grow up here?â
âIt was Paâs hunting lodge. We stayed here for the holidays. Though after Ma died, Pa moved us out here permanently.â
She hands me the plate with the sandwich she made for me. âHow did she die?â Her voice chokes.
âThanks, baby.â I take the plate, looking at the sandwich, reminding me of how Ma was always making sure Iâd eaten. A pain stabs me in the
