mating.”

“We don’t know that.”

“We should have mated in animal form.”

“It might just be stress.” Billy reached out to straighten the T-shirt

Cody had pulled on, but then he was gently caressing Cody’s

shoulder. “I have to turn myself in.”

“But you didn’t do anything.” Guilt was a far more crushing

feeling than fear could ever be.

“That doesn’t matter. I’m wanted for questioning. If I go to them

voluntarily, I can spin a story that absolves me and has nothing to do

with the men out here. Or you.” Billy sighed and looked away. “In

order for us to be together, we’d have to go into hiding, and that’s no

way for you to live. You deserve better than that.”

“I deserve to be with my mate.”

“You do.” Billy came close and pulled Cody into his arms. “You

deserve to have a life in the sunshine, Cody. I can’t give you that if

I’m a hunted man.” Billy eased him back enough so that they could

see each other. “I won’t subject you to a life in hiding. I can’t. I—”

Billy abruptly stopped talking and kissed Cody very softly.

Pictures flowed into Cody’s mind, and he found himself pouring

over them as he felt the love in his mate’s gentle touch. Images of

them together doing everything from mundane household chores like

laundry and dishes, to them sitting along a riverbank fishing, to their

bodies twined together in passion—all of the images were of the life

Billy wanted to build with him. Even though they hadn’t mated fully,

Cody knew they had a strong bond since they could communicate

without words. Usually, that only happened to fully mated pairs, just

like Dooley said.

“I can’t give you that life if we’re in hiding.”

Cody wanted to argue, but he couldn’t. Billy showed him the

exact life he’d always wanted. Moreover, he knew Billy wouldn’t do

well as a wanted man. He was a man of honor who believed in law

and order. Why else would he have made a career for himself in law
