Consider Microsoft Office

A combination of these forces forced the mighty Microsoft to change direction for Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) when Apple iPads and iPhones became popular. At first Microsoft held back from producing Word, Excel and the rest of Office for Apple iOS. But customers wanted the new Apple technology and the lack of Microsoft products did not deter them.

As it happened Microsoft Office over-served much of its market. Many customers would have been happy to buy less functional products for less money. But because Microsoft Office dominated the market there was little competition. In addition, network effects mean that while Microsoft Office is dominant anyone not using Office will be at a disadvantage.

By not advancing their own software, Microsoft allowed EverNote and Apple’s own software (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) to become established. Now there were viable competitors. At the same time the network effects reduced because more people were using other products.

Eventually Microsoft had little choice but to port Office to iOS. Had they not done so Office would have lost dominance in the market.
