Using Abbreviations

Many journals offer a list of acceptable abbreviations that can be used without definitions. Be sure to note these and use them accordingly per each journal’s requirements outlined in the Author’s Guide, and define any abbreviations not found on the journal’s list. In addition, it is not recommended that authors create their own abbreviations or use those unique to a particular clinic. All abbreviations used should be commonplace in clinical medicine.

Incorrect: ORIF was performed 3 weeks after the initial examination.

Correct: An open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) was performed 3 weeks after the initial examination.
