Riding around in this BMW had me feeling a particular type of way. I never expected this type of access to Lennox or for him to do the things I thought no one would do for me. Why did I stay away from him for six years? I didn’t know, but it was the worst decision of my life. It was easy to be with him, and I hadn’t even been back to that damn apartment. I never asked him for this car or a damn penthouse, but it was all I wanted. What else had he done for me that I didn’t know about? I was afraid to ask him that question because I knew he would tell me the truth, and what if I couldn’t handle it? I turned into the Boys & Girls Club parking lot, and the speakers began playing my ringtone. I hit the button on the steering wheel when Tali’s name popped up.

“Hey, sis, what’s up?” I asked. I parked next to the side entrance where my office was located and waited for Tali to speak. She was quiet for so long that I checked the screen to ensure we were still connected. “Tali?”

“Girl, I don’t know what’s up with me. Never mind, I’m …it isn’t nothing,” she dismissed. Something was up, and I wanted to know what the problem could be. I knew today we weren’t supposed to bring up how we would pay for Mama’s treatment, but if that’s what it was, then I’d rather we talk it through now.

“Is it about Mama? Because you know we can talk about it.”

“Yes. Well, yes, and no. I won’t lie and say it’s not stressing me the fuck out that the cost of ongoing treatment is going to run us some serious coin, but that isn’t it. I said let’s discuss it Monday so we can have a mental break this weekend, and I meant it,” she sighed.

“If that isn’t it, what the fuck is it, sis?” I sat back in the cushioned seat and reached up to pull down the sun visor. The light for the mirror came on as I checked my light make-up and matte burgundy lipstick. Today I wasn’t in the tee shirt and jeans I began finding myself in once I started working here. It seemed when I dressed down, the kids found it easier to open up more, and it was easier for me to jump into some of the sports activities to connect with the ones who had a problem with just sitting around and talking.

“Henny! It’s Hendrix and his sexy ass.”

“Oh, okay, I see where this is going,” I laughed.

“It’s not funny, Dea! I shouldn’t even have said anything to you. You so booed up and shit that you are probably looking out his asshole or something,” she snapped. I laughed harder because she was trippin’.

“Girl, shut the hell up! You’re a damn fool. Just tell me what he got you to do now. Did you
