GDB includes the ability to examine core dump files for your target platform. Post-mortem debugging gives you the ability to see the state of the system right before the program stopped working, because it’s forensic in nature; you work backward from the point of death to determine how the system died. This type of debugging is made easier when the code has some instrumentation, because you get a clearer picture of how the system arrived at its current state.
