Summary

This chapter covered the fractal, or recursive container, pattern of placing controls within controls and then placing those controls within other controls, and so on to any level of depth one might consider. We also presented a case study from our own experience to demonstrate the benefits to both business and development teams that use this approach. Finally, we discussed the details of dividing CSS and JavaScript files into small pieces at development time and combining them at runtime.

Over the course of the next several chapters, we’ll show some concrete examples of this approach. We’ll start with some of the simpler controls (links and buttons) and work up to tables and tabs and product listings. Along the way, we’ll continue to discuss the details of using controls within controls, because the more complex controls contain the simpler controls. The code we’ll present and the sample site where we’ll show how it all works isn’t as complex as the site we mentioned in the case study, but it’s enough to get you started on better controlling the complexity of your sites.
