THE JOURNALS OF MALOK THE WIZARD KING

The next morning, after Jonel has cleared away my breakfast, Indella arrives. Indella wanders into the room. I’m sitting beside the fire and she gives me a strange smile as she comes to stand in front of me. “Good morning, Princess. I’m just here to take you to the library.”

“Oh?” I look at her. I’m surprised to see Indella. I still suspect she was responsible for the guards who attacked me. But I suppose I have no way of knowing for sure.

She’s wearing a long red gown, cut low in the front as all her gowns seem to be. Her red hair is loose, falling over her shoulders.

I wonder how old she is. It is hard to tell. I wonder, as I look at her, if all the Vereem are longer lived than the people of Morain. Everyone knows Malok lived for centuries, but was that due only to his magic?

“You were expecting someone else?” Indella says coolly. “Did you assume the Queen of the Vereem would escort you around the place like your servant?”

“No,” I say, realising, of course, that, yes, I had assumed Elsin would be taking me to the library as she had the day before. And I certainly don’t want to deal with any more Red Guards. And, yes, a little surprised to find that I am a little disappointed to find Indella here instead. But I don’t want to admit this to Indella, so I say, “I was not expecting the Queen or the Queen’s Consort. I’m just a concubine. If I am to be escorted around the caverns, why not just send a Red Guard?” I look her in the eye, wondering how she will react.

Indella gives me a smile. She leans idly against the mantlepiece. “Oh yes, the guards. Were you hoping to see them again? I know the Queen has ejected you from her bed, but are you really so desperate for attention that you want to flirt with Red Guards?”

I take a breath. “Did you send those guards who attacked me? Was that you?”

“Me? Why would I do such a thing?”

“You do not want me in Queen Elsin’s bed. And it worked. I have not been invited to her bed since.”

“No,” says Indella. “No, you haven’t. But don’t think I don’t know about all those dinners. Are you still hoping that you will replace Gileanna in the Queen’s affections? You silly little child.”

“I’m not a child,” I say. “Far from it. And I would like to visit the library. Shall we go?”

“Of course. Then let me take you to the Library of the Ruby Caverns, Princess. No need to delay. It could be your last chance, after all.”

I stand up. “Why would it be my last chance? I’m here forever, am I not?”

Indella leads me out of the door of the room. “Forever? I doubt that, Princess. Nothing is forever.”

Once we’re out of the Royal Palace and walking down the stairs to the library, Indella seems eager to continue our spiky conversation.
