The principle of common vocabulary and data definitions

Business semantics that adequately describe data in an organization and its relationships are key. The goal here is to eliminate ambiguity in multiple teams referring to the same data using different semantics. There are several best practices in how to achieve this depending on the maturity of the organization and their data modernization journey. A traditional best practice for a central Data Governance organization is to establish a canonical enterprise model that captures the business vocabulary for the organization to establish standardization. The latest best practice is to support a federated Data Governance organization where each business domain has a common vocabulary established, although it has strong interoperability standards that enable its sharing across diverse business domains.
